By offering periodontal therapy for your gums, nightguards to protect your teeth while you sleep, and other general services, we help prevent dental issues from surprising you down the road. This is the way a long-term relationship with your dentist should be.

Perio Therapy

Periodontal disease (also called gum disease or gingivitis) refers to the infection of the supportive tissues of the teeth due to toxic bacteria found in plaque. Many individuals suffer from some degree of gum disease, and if left untreated, gum disease can cause tooth loss, break down of the soft tissue in the mouth and jaw, and other significant health problems. Your periodontal therapy may include gentle removal of plaque and bacteria from beneath the gum line, or a more advanced treatment designed to restore and maintain your gum health. Since diseases like diabetes and heart-related illnesses have been connected to gum disease, it is important that you let our team protect your health through periodontal therapy.

Q: WHY DO I HAVE PERIODONTAL DISEASE NOW?

A: Periodontal disease is very, very common – as many as 80% of adults have some form of the disease. Also, the disease has been called the “silent disease,” since symptoms don’t tend to show up until it has reached an advanced state. It is not uncommon for us to suggest treatment for gum disease to a patient that has never been told their gums need attention. The good news is, when caught early enough, gum disease is reversible. And, even if your gum disease is advanced, we can give you the treatment and therapy you need to halt the disease and can help you get back to the best dental health possible.

Q: I BRUSH EVERY DAY, SO WHY ISN'T MY BREATH FRESH?

A: Millions of people struggle with halitosis, or bad breath, despite daily teeth brushing. Here is a checklist of procedures that can eliminate the problem: twice daily brushing; daily flossing and tongue cleaning; regular professional cleanings; and, careful cleaning of any dentures or removable dental appliances. However, if your hygiene is meticulous and the problem persists, we can offer several solutions.

First, we can provide a plastic tool called a tongue scraper that cleans away bacterial build-up on your tongue, significantly alleviating odor. Or, we can recommend a specially-prepared rinse or toothpaste designed to actually break the odor-causing sulfur bonds that cause bad breath. Finally, if we suspect a systemic or internal problem, such as an infection or underlying condition, we may recommend a visit with your family physician or specialist to identify the cause.

Fillings

After your doctor removes the decay from a cavity, she will need to restore the structure of your tooth with a filling. This filling will also protect the interior of your tooth structure by keeping decay from re-forming in the area and worsening the damage. In the past, a silver amalgam material was the material of choice for a dental filling. This material is durable and can be molded to take on the precise shape of your tooth; however, it is easy to see when you speak or smile. Now, you can opt for tooth-colored fillings that are made from a durable porcelain-based resin.

Nightguards

Do you suffer from headaches, jaw pain, or neck pain, especially in the morning? Do you have worn or chipped teeth? You might be one of the many people who suffer from bruxism – the clenching or grinding of the teeth. Most people with bruxism clench or grind their teeth while they sleep. A custom nightguard from Dr. Holst or your Dental Designs team can protect your teeth from damage and alleviate your pain. A nightguard is similar to a sports mouthguard. It fits comfortably over your teeth to keep them from contacting one another and to hold your jaw in a relaxed position. You don’t need to keep living with daily pain!

Q: WHY DO MY TEETH KEEP CHIPPING AND CRACKING?

A: Many people who notice chipped or cracked teeth, but don’t remember when the injury occurred, damaged their teeth while they were sleeping. Grinding or clenching your teeth during the night will cause your teeth to chip, crack, and even break. To keep you from seriously damaging your teeth, we recommend a dental appliance called a nightguard. A custom-fitted nightguard protects your teeth from grinding and clenching in your sleep. Your Dental Designs doctors take great care in making sure you have a proper fit to prevent pain in your jaw joint. Do you suffer from headaches? You may find that a side benefit of your nightguard is headache prevention. Many headaches start during the night, caused by the extreme pressure generated as you grind and clench your teeth. Ask us about having a nightguard custom created especially for you.
